On Friday, our Y13 chemistry and applied Science students were lucky enough to attend a laboratory session at Sheffield Hallam University to help them develop their practical skills and experience working with high-spec equipment in a university lab.
As part of the day, students synthesised aspirin and perfected their recrystallisation technique. They were also able to analyse the purity of their products using IR spectroscopy, TLC and melting point testing.
The day was rounded off nicely with a taster lecture on inorganic chemistry delivered by Professor Neil Bricklebank.
