WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
This subject provides a platform for study at further education and to pursue a career in the health and social care sector.
The qualification is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses. It can be taken alongside, for example:
- An A Level in Biology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Nursing or Midwifery
- An A Level in Sociology, which could lead to a BA (Hons) in Social Work
- A BTEC Certificate in Sport, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy
- An A Level in Psychology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Psychology.
In the BTEC National units, we provide students with an opportunity to develop their employability skills, in three main areas:
- Cognitive and problem-solving skills: students will use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions and use systems and technology
- Interpersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing and developing self-presentation
- Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
In total, you will study 4 units, which are equally weighted at 25%. This qualification is assessed using external assessments (exams) and internal assessments (coursework).
Year 1:
- Unit 1: Human Lifespan and Development. This unit is externally assessed. You will sit a 90-minute exam, with a total of 80 marks available.
- Unit 5: Promoting Health Education. This unit is internally assessed. You will be given a Pearson Set Assignment Brief containing two tasks
Year 2:
- Unit 2: Human Health and Biology. This unit is externally assessed. You will sit a 90-minute exam, with a total of 80 marks available.
- Unit 3: Principles of Health and Social Care Practice. This unit is internally assessed. You will be given a Pearson Set Assignment Brief containing three tasks, one per Learning Aim.
