English Literature
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
If you love reading then this is the course for you!
English Literature isn’t just about reading books though; we look at how social/political/historical context can have an impact on literature, links between literature written at different times and it can help you improve your verbal and written communication skills.
In addition to this, it encourages independent and critical thought, empathy for a variety of different characters and situations and also helps you to improve your analytical skills.
WHAT DOES THIS QUALIFICATION COVER?
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
YEAR 1
In the first year, you will study unseen love poetry and unseen war prose, The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald, pre-1900 poetry on the theme of Love Through the Ages, The Taming of the Shrew play by Shakespeare and Journey’s End by RC Sherriff.
YEAR 2
In the second year, you will complete your Non-Exam Assessment, which is a 2500 word essay comparing two texts of your choice, and you will study A Long Long Way by Sebastian Barry and a selection of poetry about WW1 and its aftermath. Plus you’ll revise the content from Year 12.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Two exams:
Love Through the Ages – 3 hours
World War I and its aftermath – 2.5 hours, both worth 80% of your A Level.
A 2500 word Non-Exam Assessment (essay) worth 20% of your A Level.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of a grade 6 in English Literature is required.
