WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

English Language studies the complexities of English in real life situations. The study of semantics is key to critical analysis in all subjects and English Language is not only a subject but the medium of learning, making it invaluable in academia.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Year 1:

Textual Variation and Representation: This deals with the conscious and subconscious choices made by speakers and writers. We focus on the representation of people, events and ideas. We analyse how the representations are created and why, considering any contextual factors or influences that may impact a writer, or speaker’s choices.  

Language Diversity: This topic involves the study of how social, geographical and individual factors influence language use.  Students focus on how accents and dialects vary nationally, and the different attitudes towards them.  Students also learn how factors such as gender, power and occupation influence language use.   

Writing Skills: This will comprise of opinionated articles written for professional publications focusing on language issues.

Year 2:

Language Acquisition: This will track the various stages of children’s acquisition of speech, reading and writing. This offers insight into grammatical structures, their logic and child psychology.

Language Change: This topic tracks the roots of our language, where it came from, and which languages have influenced it. This involves looking critically at how our language is structured, and how it has developed into different World Englishes.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Two exams (2 hour 30 mins)

  • Language Investigation (2000 words)
  • Creative writing piece and commentary (1500 words)
