Further Maths

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

Further Mathematics is an A level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A level Mathematics. You will find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering course. For someone who enjoys Mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. It also enables you to distinguish yourself as an able mathematician in the University and Employment market.

In the new Further Mathematics A level, all students will be assessed based on their knowledge of Pure Mathematics and a component that is based on Applied mathematics. This Applied unit is Decision Mathematics (an area of maths not covered in the new Maths A level). The Pure unit and the Applied unit are each worth 50% of the course.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

YEAR 1

The Pure Maths element of the course includes:

  • Proof
  • Complex numbers
  • Matrices
  • Further Algebra
  • Functions

The Applied (Decision Maths) element of the course includes:

  • Sorting algorithms
  • Algorithms on graphs (eg Prim’s and Kruskal’s algorithm)
  • Critical path analysis
  • Linear Programming

YEAR 2

The Pure Maths element of the course includes:

  • Additional Complex numbers,
  • Additional Matrices,
  • Additional Further Algebra and Functions,
  • Further Calculus,
  • Further Vectors,
  • Polar Coordinates,
  • Hyperbolic Functions and Differential Equations

The Applied (Decision Maths) element of the course includes:

  • Additional Algorithms on graphs (eg Floyd’s algorithm)
  • Additional Critical Path Analysis
  • Additional Linear Programming

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

All examinations will be taken at the end of the course rather than in modules and it is expected that questions will link different aspects of the course.

WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

Further Mathematics makes the transition to a mathematics-related University course easier.
