Starting at Wickersley Sixth Form is an exciting time, but it can also feel like a big change. New subjects, new routines, more independence and higher expectations can take a little time to get used to.
As our Year 12 students settle into their second week at Wickersley Sixth Form, here are five things we want every new student to know.
1. It’s OK if it feels different
Sixth Form is a step up from Secondary School and GCSEs, and your routine will probably look different to what you’re used to. You might have free periods, spend more time working independently and find that you’re expected to take greater responsibility for keeping on top of your work. However, if you do find your struggling, the Wickersley Sixth Form team is here to help you succeed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
It might take you a few weeks to settle into your new routine and rhythm; everyone adapts at their own pace.
2. Your study periods are yours to use
One of the biggest changes at Sixth Form is having more independent study time. Your free periods are yours to use how you wish; whether that’s studying, catching up with friends, having a driving lessons, or leaving site for a walk or food. However, we encourage you to use these periods to study and keep on top of your workload!
Do what works best for you, and try to find the right balance.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Being in Sixth Form does mean that more is expected of you, but you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Our dedicated Sixth Form team is here to help wherever you need it – whether that’s putting in place plans to help you understand your topics more clearly, or if you feel like you need help with your mental health and wellbeing – we’re here to help! Never be afraid to reach out and ask for help, it doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. Your teachers and the Sixth Form team are there to support you. Asking for help early is always better than letting something become a bigger problem.
4. Get involved in Sixth Form life
Your time at Sixth Form isn’t just about your subjects. We offer enrichment activities to suit every taste. Why not take part in our House Events (keep an eye out for those being announced soon!)? Take some time to relax in the common room and chat to your peers.
If you want to find out more about any other activities you can take part in, or what might be happening throughout the year, keep an eye on your emails, or talk to the Wickersley Sixth Form Team.
5. You don’t have to have everything figured out yet
This is a big one! You’ve only been here two weeks! We know that life after Sixth Form is talked about a lot, and university, apprenticeships, or employment is often high on our list of priorities, but if you get overwhelmed with all this new information, don’t worry! We don’t expect you to have your entire future mapped out this early on (or even later on)! Take the time to explore your options, see what you’re good at and what you enjoy, speak to other people about their plans. Remember, what you think you might want now may completely change in a few months time.
Again, if you don’t have anything in mind, you can come and speak to the team and we can talk about everything to help you get on the track you want for your future.
Starting Sixth Form is a journey
The first few weeks are about settling in, finding your feet and getting to know your new routine. Give yourself time, make the most of the opportunities around you and don’t be afraid to ask for support.
You’ve got two years to grow, learn and prepare for whatever comes next. Make the most of them.
