Apprenticeship Myths Busted

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re busting some common misconceptions about apprenticeships. We find that some students are still apprehensive about apprenticeships, but we want to shout about how good they can be! Swipe through our images to see some of the biggest myths we hear, alongside the exciting realities of what an apprenticeship truly offers today.

Myth:

Apprenticeships are often underestimated compared to degrees.

Reality:

Apprenticeships are valued just as highly as degrees in the competitive job landscape. Apprenticeships offer the hand-on experience that a lot of employers are looking for. There are so many different apprenticeships available now, including Degree Apprenticeships, which mean you can gain a full degree whilst you have the hands on experience of working life.

Myth:

Apprenticeships are for those who haven’t done well in school.

Reality:

Apprenticeships aren’t a one-size-fits-all concept. There are so many different levels with different entry requirements, meaning they are open to everyone. Our Sixth Form team can help you find the right apprenticeship for you to get you on the career path you’ve chosen.

Myth:

Apprenticeships are just for hands-on or trade roles.

Reality:

The most popular apprenticeships in the UK (according to most recent data) are in Business and Administration. Apprenticeships are available across so many sectors now, including Healthcare, IT, engineering and media; the opportunities are seemingly endless. If you’re unsure that about whether you want to attend university, then an apprenticeship may well be the right path for you.

Myth:

Apprentices are given the ‘boring’ tasks that no one else wants to do.

Reality:

Apprentices are employees. You will be working on real projects and tasks. These help you to understand important aspects of the job, and work alongside your qualifications. You will get support from your employer and mentor, to guide you and help you grow. See our social media posts for some of the apprentice success stories that our former students have – you’ll see that these jobs are anything but boring!

Myth:

Apprenticeships won’t lead to a full time job.

Reality:

A high percentage (85%) of apprentices go into full-time employment, or into futher training after completing their apprenticeship, according to a recent study. Plus, over 60% of apprentices stay on with the same employer.

Apprenticeships offer real opportunities to those who are willing to put in the hard work. If you’re looking at the apprenticeship route after Sixth Form, make sure you speak to the Sixth Form team, and we can help you with your applications and information about all the routes available to you.
