House System
New for September 2025, Wickersley Sixth Form has introduced a house system.
Once enrolled, students become part of a house – a community within our wider school community – a family-like, pastoral group of Year 12 and 13 students who share a house name and guiding ethos.
Each house has its own identity, including an emblem and core values, all of which support our wider school ethos, the Wickersley Way.
Our sixth form houses are:
Carbo
Chalybs
Ferrum
Vitrum
Reflecting our Rotherham heritage, we have named our houses after the four traditional industries that shaped the town: coal (Carbo), steel (Chalybs), iron (Ferrum), and glass (Vitrum).
Throughout the year, students will be encouraged to engage in healthy competition, participating in events to earn points for their house. House points can also be awarded for consistently getting the basics right, like strong attendance and high effort. At the end of each academic year, we declare the winning house!
We think our house system will really help everyone in sixth form feel like they belong, especially if you’re joining us from another school. It’ll also give students chances to be a leader and have some fun competing.
Carbo Values:
- Energetic
- Resilient
- Industrious
Coal is a concentrated source of energy. Concentrate your mental energy, avoid distractions and maintain focus.
Similar to the formation of coal, deep learning requires time, effort, and a resilient learner who can cope with constant pressure.
Just as mining coal requires industrious individuals putting in lots of time, effort, and planning, apply the same dedication to your learning.
Chalybs Values:
- Strong
- Tough
- Tenacious
Steel is stronger than most materials. Whilst studying, remain strong and resilient and never give up.
Steel can withstand significant tension without breaking, effective learning requires similar mental toughness.
Steel is tenacious, strong and durable. If you are tenacious about study habits, like organisation and presentation, your learning will get stronger.
Ferrum Values:
- Durable
- Adaptable
- Intense
Iron is durable. You need to be resilient bounce back from mistakes, and persevere even when studying gets tough.
Iron is versatile and adaptable capable of being formed into many shapes. Shape your study habits over time, perfecting your skills and techniques.
Iron is forged under intense heat; deep learning requires similar, sustained, mental ‘heat’ – consistent effort and focus over time.
Vitrum Values
- Reflective
- Transparent
- Focused
The reflective nature of glass mirrors the goal of effective study: reflect on your weaknesses and learn from them.
Like transparent glass revealing all, a transparent learner is honest about their understanding and acknowledges gaps in their learning.
Like a magnifying glass, effective study requires focused attention. Use your ‘lens’ carefully.
