Last week, our Y12 Physics students completed one of their first practical assessments, investigating the electrical characteristics of filament lamps, resistors and LEDs. Prior to the assessment, students had been taught how to use multimeters as ammeters and voltmeters, as well as how to correctly connect a potentiometer into a circuit.
All students performed extremely well, demonstrating strong practical skills – from constructing electrical circuits and using digital equipment to working safely and confidently in the laboratory. Practical assessments are an exciting and essential part of A-Level Physics, running alongside the theory students learn in lessons. Although these practicals are formally assessed, they are not completed under exam conditions and all skills are taught in advance.
At the end of the course, following their written exams, the practical endorsement will be awarded separately to their A-Level grade (e.g. “Grade A with a pass in the practical endorsement”). Our students are already looking forward to their next practical assessment next week!
