WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

Mathematics is among the most fascinating of all intellectual disciplines. You will learn how to apply maths by using statistical analysis and modelling in mechanics to solve real-life problems and recognise its significance to other disciplines.

You will extend your skills in algebra and trigonometry and develop new skills in the field of calculus, which is one of the most important areas of mathematics. You will develop analytical skills and the ability to summarise numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions.

In the new Mathematics A-level, all students will be assessed based on their knowledge of three areas: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. The assessment objectives include a greater emphasis on modelling, problem-solving and reasoning, building on the increase in problem-solving in GCSE so students will be better prepared.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Year 1

You will study three compulsory units: Pure, statistics and Mechanics.

The pure maths element of the course includes:

Algebra and Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Exponentials and Logs, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical methods, Vectors and Proof

The statistics element of the course includes:

Statistical sampling, Probability, Statistical Distributions, Hypothesis testing and Data Presentation

The mechanics element of the course includes:

Kinematics, Forces and Newton’s Laws

Year 2

You will study three compulsory units; Pure, statistics and Mechanics.

The pure maths element of the course includes:

Additional Algebra and Functions, Additional Coordinate Geometry, Additional Exponentials and Logs, Additional Differentiation, Additional Integration, Numerical methods and Additional Proof

The statistics element of the course includes:

Additional Probability, Additional Statistical distributions, Additional Hypothesis testing

The mechanics element of the course includes:

Additional Kinematics, Additional Forces and Newton’s Laws and Moments

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

All examinations will be taken at the end of the course rather than in modules and it is expected that questions will link different aspects of the course.

WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

A Level Maths is a much sought after qualification for entry to higher education as well as many areas of employment. Courses for which A-Level Maths is useful to include Medicine, Architecture, Teaching, Engineering, Accountancy, Psychology, Economics, Business and Management.
