BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care

 

Why study this course?

This subject provides a platform for study at further education and to pursue a career in the health and social care sector.
The qualification is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses. It can be taken alongside, for example:

  • An A Level in Biology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Nursing or Midwifery
  • An A Level in Sociology, which could lead to a BA (Hons) in Social Work
  • A BTEC Certificate in Sport, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy
  • An A Level in Psychology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Psychology.

In the BTEC National units, we provide students with an opportunity to develop their employability skills, in three main areas:

  • Cognitive and problem-solving skills: students will use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions and use systems and technology
  • Interpersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing and developing self-presentation
  • Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.

Year 1

  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Working in Health and Social Care

 

Year 2

  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
  • Physiological Disorders and their Care

 

How will I be assessed?

Four units make up this qualification; Two are assessed externally.
Internal assessment: Coursework x 2
External assessment x 2 January/June

 

Where can it lead?

This course can lead to a range of health and social care careers, some examples of these are:

  • Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Social work
